LIQUID SYNERGY WITH CORN GLUTEN MEAL

Mid Summer Pre-Emergent Weed Control and Fertilizer for Lawns

Liquid Synergy with Corn Gluten Meal is your go-to solution for a lush, healthy lawn, combining the power of all-natural pre-emergent weed control with organic fertilization. Derived from corn gluten meal, a byproduct of corn syrup production, this time-tested product has been effectively controlling weeds for over 30 years.

When you apply Liquid Synergy, you actively prevent new weed seeds from germinating. New users can expect up to a 60% reduction in weed seed germination right away, and with consistent use over three years, this can escalate to an astonishing 95% reduction. This long-lasting effectiveness is due to the unique residual benefits corn gluten meal imparts to the soil.

In addition to weed control, Liquid Synergy doubles as a 100% organic fertilizer that nourishes your lawn for 4-6 weeks. This promotes root vigor, enhances microbial activity, and fosters organic soil development, all while stimulating healthy root growth. The result? A vibrant “green-up” that transforms your lawn into a thick and resilient turf, capable of resisting disease and fungal issues without harmful chemicals like fungicides or pesticides.

Best of all, Liquid Synergy with corn gluten meal is 100% organic—it is edible and non-toxic to people, pets, and children. Make the choice for a healthier lawn today!

Natural Weed Control for Grass

Lawns in the Boulder and Fort Collins area respond exceptionally well to Synergy applications because the nitrogen source is 100% organic and released slowly. This means that the nutrients become available to the grass only after soil microbes decompose the corn gluten meal. As a result, this organic fertilizer gradually feeds the lawn, making it impossible to damage the grass during the heat of the summer, unlike synthetic fertilizers. The slow release of nutrients from organic fertilizers leads to a beautiful, deep green lawn that lasts.

Liquid Synergy with corn gluten meal is made from only the highest quality natural ingredients and is considered non-toxic to people, pets, dogs, cats, and children.

How Effective is Corn Gluten Meal on Weeds?

Corn gluten meal is effective at preventing weed seeds from germinating. However, during its first year of use on a lawn, it will only achieve about a 60% control rate for weeds. If corn gluten meal is applied consistently over consecutive years, the effectiveness of weed control will improve each year.

Year 1: 60% control rate on weeds in a lawn
Year 2: 70% control rate on weeds in a lawn
Year 3: 80% control rate on weeds in a lawn
Year 4+: 90%+ control rate on weeds in a lawn

Note: Synergy combined with corn gluten meal is most effective as a pre-emergent organic weed control solution for lawns. Regular use of corn gluten meal will improve soil quality and inhibit the proper germination of weed seeds. The longer Synergy is applied to a lawn consecutively, the more effectively it will prevent weed growth. Customers in the Boulder and Fort Collins areas who have been using Liquid Synergy with corn gluten meal on their lawns for three or more consecutive years report very few weeds.

How Does Corn Gluten Meal Kill Weeds?

Corn gluten meal does not actually kill weeds; instead, it prevents weed seeds from germinating effectively. When weeds germinate in a lawn, the young plants develop secondary feeder roots, which are crucial for absorbing essential nutrients from the soil. Corn gluten meal, a by-product of corn syrup production, damages the feeder roots of many young plants. As a result, while many weeds may germinate, they will not grow into mature weeds due to the damage to their secondary feeder roots. Research has shown that corn gluten meal can effectively control various types of weeds, including dandelions, crabgrass, thistle, clover, plantain, and lamb’s ears.

When is the Ideal Time to Apply Liquid Synergy?

This is a summer application and will be applied during June and July.

Liquid Synergy is an all-organic pre-emergent weed control that is registered by the Colorado Department of Agriculture and recommended for lawns in the Boulder and Fort Collins areas.

Liquid Synergy with Corn Gluten Meal

How Does Corn Gluten Meal Work?

The reason corn gluten meal is so effective at stopping weed seeds from germinating may not be entirely understood, but its impact is undeniable. When a weed first sprouts, it quickly develops a secondary feeder root to absorb essential nutrients from the soil. Corn gluten meal interferes with this critical growth by damaging that feeder root, which effectively prevents the weed from maturing into a full-grown plant. Embracing corn gluten meal in your garden care routine is a smart, natural choice for a thriving, weed-free environment!

What is the Difference Between Liquid and Granular Corn Gluten Meal?

Liquid corn gluten meal and granular corn gluten meal differ in their forms and nitrogen content. Liquid corn gluten meal is water-soluble and is often used in liquid fertilizers or as a spray-on weed suppressant. It contains only 1.5% nitrogen by weight, compared to 10% nitrogen by weight in granular corn gluten meal. The lower nitrogen content of the liquid form makes it better suited for application during the heat of summer, as it will not promote excessive growth during dry months.

On the other hand, granular corn gluten meal is available in a dry, pelletized, or granulated form, making it ideal for home gardens and manual application. Although granular corn gluten meal takes longer to break down, it provides a more prolonged release of nutrients, helping with weed control and serving as a soil amendment over time. Ultimately, the choice between the two depends on the method of application, the desired speed of nutrient delivery, and the preferred time of year for application.

Liquid corn gluten meal is an ideal application for the early summer. It will not burn a lawn even if it is over applied and it will help prevent summer annual weeds from germinating properly.

Corn gluten meal is a byproduct of the corn milling process, primarily used as a high-protein supplement in animal feed. In gardening and lawn care, it is used as an organic pre-emergent herbicide and fertilizer due to its nitrogen content.

Liquid Synergy is applied with a commercial spray tank.  It is a liquid product and will not burn a lawn, even when applied during the heat of the summer.

Liquid Synergy is designed to be applied during the heat of the summer, right before the summer annual weeds begin germination.  This is typically sometime between early June – early July.

  • Corn gluten meal can be moderately effective at controlling weeds in a lawn when used correctly, but its success depends on several factors. As a pre-emergent herbicide, it prevents weed seeds from developing roots after germination, effectively stopping annual weeds like crabgrass, dandelions, and foxtail before they establish. However, it does not control existing weeds or perennial weeds with established root systems.

When applied at the right time—typically early spring for summer weeds and early fall for cool-season weeds—it can reduce weed seed germination by 60-80% over multiple applications. Results are not immediate; repeated, consistent use over 2-3 growing seasons is often necessary to see significant improvement.

Factors such as timing, soil moisture, and application rate impact its effectiveness. Additionally, it requires a sufficient application rate—20 pounds per 1,000 square feet—to achieve the desired results.  Overall Corn Gluten Meal works best as part of a comprehensive lawn care plan that includes proper lawn watering practices and lawn mowing techniques.

We tend to see the following weed control rates when using Corn Gluten Meal.  We find the best results in the lawns where the homeowners are also following our watering and lawn mowing recommendations.

    • First Year = 60% control rate
    • Second Year = 70% control rate
    • Third Year = 80% control rate
    • Fourth Year = 90%+ control rate

Posting a pesticide application flag is a legal requirement, even if the product used is 100% organic. This is mandated by the Department of Agriculture. Any product that claims to control weeds must be marked with a pesticide application marker.

Dandelions are biennial plants, meaning they germinate from seed in their first year and then continue to grow from their root system for one to two additional years. Because your lawn naturally has dandelions at various stages of growth, it is important to apply Synergy annually. Synergy only controls weeds that germinate from seed. Therefore, the first application of Synergy will not eliminate dandelions that are sprouting from an established root system. While patience is required when using corn gluten meal, it can be extremely effective when used regularly over a 2-3 year period.

Synergy is a pre-emergent weed control product, which means it prevents weed seeds from germinating and developing properly. However, it does not kill existing weeds. Additionally, since it may affect grass seeds, we do not recommend applying this product if you plan to plant grass in the next 2 to 4 weeks.

This product is an organic pre-emergent, which means it will not prevent all weeds from germinating—only those that grow from seeds. If used in combination with One Earth Weed Killer as part of a full season program, you can expect to achieve a mostly weed-free lawn within a year, provided you also follow proper cultural practices like mowing and watering.

Instant results are not something that Synergy can guarantee. If you are looking for a completely weed-free lawn after just one application, it’s important to understand that organic lawn care is a gradual process. However, with patience and consistent effort, this program can be very effective.

To effectively control weeds, Corn Gluten Meal should be applied at a rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet or more. In comparison, most chemical fertilizers are typically applied at a rate of only 2 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet, meaning that a greater quantity of product is needed when using Corn Gluten Meal.

Yes, corn gluten meal is rich in nitrogen, containing about 10% by weight. This makes it a beneficial slow-release fertilizer that can help promote healthy grass, stimulate microbial activity, and promote plant growth while controlling weeds.

You can use corn gluten meal in vegetable gardens, but caution is needed. Since it inhibits seed germination, it should not be applied where you plan to sow seeds. It’s best used around established plants or transplants to control weeds without affecting your vegetables.

Note that Organo-Lawn will not apply any product to vegetable gardens, but we do sell bags of Synergy for homeowner use.

It is possible but unlikely. Organic nitrogen sources like the one from Corn Gluten Meal can leach into the water supply under rare conditions, though the risk is dramatically lower compared to synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. Organic nitrogen sources, such as compost, manure, or plant-based materials (e.g., alfalfa meal), release nitrogen only through microbial activity. This gradual release dramatically reduces the immediate risk of leaching and if leaching does occur it is only a fraction of the total nitrogen.

Unfortunately, 99.7% of the corn produced in the U.S. is not organically grown. While there is organic corn gluten meal available, it is priced at four times the cost of conventional options. This high price makes it prohibitive for most people to purchase.
